Vitamin C, Energy and Immunity: The Basics
What does vitamin C do for energy and immunity? Explore its role, food sources and the limits of supplements when you feel tired.
Energy and immunity appear on plenty of supplement labels. Understanding what those words mean makes shopping simpler. Vitamin C has recognised roles in the body, but that does not make a vitamin supplement an instant answer to every tired afternoon.
What does vitamin C do?
Vitamin C contributes to normal immune function and energy metabolism, and to reducing tiredness and fatigue. These are recognised nutrient functions in the Great Britain health claims register. Claims on a particular product also depend on it meeting the relevant conditions of use.
The key distinction is between a nutrient's role and the result an individual should expect from taking more of it. The wording is not a promise of an immediate energy surge. It also does not mean ginger itself has the same authorised claims.
Does vitamin C prevent colds?
Normal immune function does not mean you will never get ill. The NIH review of vitamin C evidence reports that regular supplementation does not generally reduce the chance of catching a cold in the general population. More is not automatically better.
Think of vitamin C as part of your nutritional intake, not a way to make yourself cold-proof. That is a more useful starting point when comparing products advertised around immunity.
Start with food
Peppers, citrus fruit, strawberries and broccoli are all sources of vitamin C. The NHS vitamin C guide says adults should usually be able to get what they need from a varied diet.
Vitamin C also helps the body absorb iron from plant foods, as explained in the NIH fact sheet. If you follow a plant-based diet, our vegan supplement label guide looks at how to assess a formula in the context of your wider needs.
What if you keep feeling tired?
Tiredness can have many causes, including sleep, stress and medical conditions. A supplement label cannot tell you which applies. If tiredness lasts for weeks, affects daily life or comes with other symptoms, follow the NHS advice on fatigue and speak to a GP.
Choosing a supplement with vitamin C
Check the amount in the recommended daily portion and look at any other supplements you already take. Keep the ingredients distinct: the evidence for vitamin C should not become a blanket claim about every ingredient beside it.
